Name[]

Li Da-Zhong (李大中) is sometimes transliterated as Li Da-Chun[1].

Biography[]

Li was born in 1810.

Studying with the Wu Family[]

Li was the first practitioner bajiquan from of Luo Tuan and is said to have studied under Wu Ying. Hover, in the Cang County Records (沧县志), Li (alongside fellow disciple Zhang Ke-Ming) is reported as a disciple of Wu Rong (吴荣) as opposed to Wu Ying/Rong (吴溁) however, according to Wu Hui-Qing's 1936 manual, began study in 1846 when Wu Rong had died (or would have been 80 years old), and so it stands to reason that Wu Ying was his teacher[2]. The Wang family also list Li as a student of Wu Yong, which as another name used for Wu Ying. Additionally, they list Wu Ying as living 1778-1863, which would mean he could have still been alive and aged only 58[1].

Later in life, he had two sons: Li Gui-Zhang, in 1855, and Li Gui-Zhao. According to some sources within the Wang family, there was some form of conflict between Li and his martial brother Zhang Ke-Ming, surrounding who would inherit Li's bajiquan after his death.

Death[]

Li Dazhong is said to have died of illness in 1874. Others report that he was killed in a battle against the Nian Rebellion army (捻軍) as they approached his hometown.

At the time, his son Li Guizhang was only 19 years old, which caused conflict with the family of Zhang Ke-Ming who did not feel he was ready to succeed his father[3].
