Li Etang

Li Etang

Li Etang 李萼堂 (1904-1972), a native of Cangzhou, Hebei, China, was the adoptive son of martial artist Li Shuwen. He was proficient in Baji Boxing and Liuhe Big Gun.

Li Etang was born in Yanshan County, southeast of Cangzhou. His father was a member of the Li Shuwen family. Because Li Shuwen had no children, he adopted him to Li Shuwen.

Li Shuwen was hired by Xu Lanzhou of the Northeast Army as the chief instructor. At the age of 8, Li Etang began to follow Li Shuwen to practice martial arts with Xu Lanzhou's sons Xu Jiafu, Xu Jialu and Liu Qirui. At the age of 19, he defeated the martial arts instructor of the Northeast Army and was hired as an instructor of the Fengtian cavalry brigade.

In 1925, Li Jinglin hired Li Shuwen to his army, and Li Etang returned to Tianjin for this reason to practice the big gun. In 1926, Li Shuwen transferred to Shen Honglie , Shandong, and Li Etang also went there. After 1930, he was employed as a teacher in Hebei Guoshu Museum, Tianjin Guoshu Museum and Shandong Guoshu Museum. Under the instruction of Li Shuwen, Li Etang can smash seven bricks in the palm of his hand. He has the nickname Iron Luohan. Befriended Wan Laisheng when he was in Shandong Guoshu Museum .

In 1931, together with Wan Laisheng and others, at the invitation of General He Jian , Chairman of Hunan Province , from Jinan to Changsha, Hunan, Wan Laisheng taught the Hunan Guoshu Museum, and Li Etang served as the chief instructor of the Special Technical Brigade of the Fourth Route Army (that is, the Hunan Army System).

In 1934, he joined the 63rd Division of the National Revolutionary Army as the captain of the Special Technical Brigade and participated in three battles in Changsha . Li Etang was responsible for the assassination work and had killed many Japanese soldiers.

In 1949, the People's Republic of China was established. Because of his participation in the National Revolutionary Army, Li Etang was sent to Shaodong to work as a rural coolie.

In 1957, Hunan held the National Games. The director of the Shaoyang Sports Commission pushed Li Etang up to Shaoyang , allowing Li Etang to be an orthopedic surgeon at the Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He was responsible for bone setting and massage. In his spare time, he participated in sports and martial arts. In the same year, Li Etang participated in the martial arts trials of Hunan Province and won the first prize. In Beijing, he participated in the national martial arts trials and only won the third prize, but Li Etang was very incomprehensible about the criteria for awards by referees.

During the Cultural Revolution , Li Etang was criticized many times before passing away.
